Weber wollte damit aufzeigen, dass Handlungen von Menschen verschiedener Gesellschaften nur im Rahmen ihrer allgemeinen Lebensauffassung erfassbar sind und das zum Beispiel religiöse Dogmen und ihre Interpretation, integrierende Bestandteile dieser Weltanschauung sind (Aron, 1971 S. 203). Er bildet damit einen Gegenpol zu der marxistischen Herangehensweise auf Grundlage des historischen Materialismus, da er behauptet, nicht die Ökonomie bestimmt die faith, sondern die faith bestimmt die Ökonomie. Marx sieht die Notwendigkeit von faith und der damit verbundenen Orientierung am Jenseits, in den schlechten Lebensbedingungen des Diesseits begründet.

Ausgangspunkt der weberischen Untersuchung warfare die Feststellungen seines Schülers Offenbacher, von einer überproportionalen „Beteiligung von Protestanten bei Kapitalbesitzern, Unternehmern und den höher qualifizierten technischen oder kaufmännischen own moderner Wirtschaftsunternehmen.“ (Kässler, 1995 S. 101).
